Soirée réussie au Centre PHI : Sortir de l’écran/Spoken Screen, 5e édition
Le 7 décembre, au Centre PHI, le public était au rendez-vous pour accueillir l’artiste Jason Edward Lewis ainsi que le collectif 2boys.tv (Aaron Pollard et Stephen Lawson) qui lors de la 5e édition de la série de performances médiatiques Sortir de l’écran/Spoken Screen.
2boys.tv présentait Phobophilia, une étude surréaliste de la peur, du plaisir, du voyeurisme et de la guerre s’inspirant du cosmos de Jean Cocteau. Affichant plus que complet, Phobophilia a fait l’objet de deux représentations dans l’espace E au 4e étage du Centre PHI.
Jason Edward Lewis, poète et artiste des arts numériques a présenté la performance Vital, une nouvelle oeuvre élaborée autour des thèmes de l’identité, de l’authenticité et de la contingence créés spécifiquement pour une interaction tactile avec des appareils mobiles. Vital fut présenté dans la salle A du centre PHI comblée par un public très enthousiaste.

Le 10 mai dernier, à la Maison de la culture Ahuntsic-Cartierville, le public et les participants du projet d’art et technologies mobiles en tournée dans 5 maisons de la culture Détours étaient présents pour souligner le lancement du projet Détours dans le cadre de la première édition de la Bienale Internationale d’Art Numérique (BIAN).
Ce projet de médiation culturelle produit par Agence TOPO est issu du projet Détours : Poétique de la ville de l’artiste Taien Ng-Chan. Présenté dans le cadre de BIAN, le projet Détours intègre le travail de dix-huit citoyens qui ont participé à une série d’ateliers d’expérimentation et de création en arts numériques au courant d’avril 2012.

Web site launch of Geoweb and realtime telematic performance with Aether9
Geoweb – A body of artistic works on the geographic web

On Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at the Society for Arts and Technology [SAT ] in Montreal, Agence TOPO launched a body of four web art projects exploring the thematic of the geographic web. Nowadays, popular cartographic and earth visualization tools have become an increasingly tangible component of how we experience the web. Moreover, the use of geolocalization systems is spreading and increasingly present in the digital world. Artists are appropriating these technologies to explore the will to “situate” and their projects question the new geographic consciousness brought about by these network practices. Selected by curator Sylvie Parent, the artists Matthew Biederman (Montréal), Grégory Chatonsky (Montréal), Zahra Poonawala (Strasbourg, France) and Cheryl Sourkes (Toronto) benefited from support and production residencies at Agence TOPO to create web-based works on this theme in 2009-2010. With Spectrum Survey, Biederman investigates on the surrounding electromagnetic spectrum. In Circulation, Chatonsky uses urban traffic sites and their RSS feeds to control dialogues between a man and a woman. Poonawala proposes an unusual sight of the world with a collection of outside speakers in Public Address System, and Sourkes proposes GeoTag, a web version of the word game Geography.
In 2009 and 2010, at Agence TOPO, have worked on the project former director Michel Lefebvre and his interim successor Pascal Boucher, the web designers Guy Asselin and Vincent Archambault, as well as multimedia trainees Keshia Nau-Dominique and Alex St-Gelais.

Aether9 – Realtime remote performance

Also on the program for the night was Aether 9, a realtime telematic performance with artists from Quebec, Switzerland, Colombia, Belgium, Australia and Finland. Aether9 is a collaborative art project exploring the field of realtime video transmission. It was initiated in May 2007 during a workshop at the Mapping Festival in Geneva, Switzerland. Developed by an international group of visual artists and collectives working in different locations (Europe, North and South America) and communicating solely through the Internet, Aether9 is a framework for networked video/audio performance, and the collaborative development of dramarturgical rules particular to Internet modes of communication. The system functions as an open platform to transmit imagery in realtime and interact through a structured narrative performance questioning the issues of presence/absence, remote/local, identity and intimacy in the context of the electronic space.
In Montréal, Aether9 will be composed of Audrey Samson, hosted in residency at Agence TOPO this Spring as part of the Sortir de l’écran/Spoken Screen Program, accompanied by Jordan Arseneault and Christiaan Cruz.

Une 6e Kalavera pour Makila au FNC – le 11 octobre
En grande primeur, MAKILA présente la 6e KALAVERA au Festival du nouveau cinéma, dimanche le 11 octobre, en soirée, à l’Agora Hydro-Québec de l’UQAM, 175, rue du Président-Kennedy.

Depuis un an maintenant, l’Agence TOPO appuie ce collectif de vidéastes regroupés en une coopérative de travail et de création. En novembre 2008, à la SAT, TOPO entamait avec eux un cycle de collaboration avec la tenue d’ateliers, la création du site internet http://www.makila.tv et la présentation à la SAT de deux Manifiesta, soirées festives de projection de la plus récente Kalavera Deliciosa, un cadavre exquis vidéo. À leur tour, les membres du collectif ont entrepris cet été de partager leur expertise et de réaliser une édition coast to coast de la Kalavera.
Depuis le mois d’août, dix jeunes de Montréal-Nord participent à des ateliers axés sur la production vidéo pour le web. Ils ont pu expérimenter les techniques de caméra, la prise de son, le travail avec des acteurs nonprofessionnels et le montage auprès de formateurs de la coopérative Makila. À ce projet réalisé en collaboration avec le Carrefour jeunesse-emploi Bourassa-Sauvé, se sont greffés des cinéastes des quatre coins au Canada pour faire une édition coast to coast de la Kalavera Deliciosa, en tout 16 vidéos de 30 secondes qui relient Vancouver à Halifax en passant par Saskatoon.
Le samedi 17 octobre prochain, à 14 h, il sera aussi possible de rencontrer Makila à l’Agence TOPO, au 5455 de Gaspé, lors des Ateliers portes ouvertes du Mile-End, Makila présentera cette nouvelle Kalavera et ses membres témoigneront de leur expérience avec les jeunes, un vrai laboratoire d’essais et un lieu de dialogue. Rappelons que l’engagement continu de l’Agence TOPO avec le collectif vise à la création d’une Kalavera en mode 2.0, une version interactive du cadavre exquis.

101 Song Scores, a performative and poetic infiltration @ Art Pop 2009
As part of Art Pop 2009, Agence TOPO presents101 Song Scores, a performative and poetic infiltration initiative by the artists Sheena Hoszko & Michelle Lacombe.

101 Song Scores is a project which addresses the subjective ways of relating to song lyrics and their meaning. The artists compiled a database of song “scores” (text-based performance directions) culled from the lyrics of western popular music of the last 50 years. In collaboration with Agence Topo, these informations are available online to propose a long series of shared moments of action. With an emphasis on waiting, the 101 Song Scoresweb page highlights the integral relationship between an action and its duration. Have fun, perform!

Directed by Julien Ceccaldi & Kit Malo, Art Pop 2009 presents emerging and established artists to engage and entice POP Montréal festival-goers. Art POP’s Vernissage/Opening party will take place on the 30th of September, from 5pm onwards at Espace Reunion 6600 Rue Hutchison.
Sheena Hoszko & Michelle Lacombe are Montreal-based artists whose conceptual practices overlap in relation to the body, language, and emotion. 101 Song Scores is their first collaborative project.

MAKILA Manifiesta @ SAT March 24, 8 PM
On Tuesday March 24, 2009, at the Société des arts technologiques [SAT], Agence TOPO presented another edition of Makila Manifiesta, an evening of celebration, music and video screenings featuring the video artists of Makila coop, with guest DJs, in collaboration with Festivalissimo, the Montréal Spanish and Latino-American Film Festival.

Promising another extravaganza of image and sound, the media collective Makila presented its video manifesto, followed by the world première of the 5th Kalavera Deliciosa – a video cadavre exquis composed of 13 short clips – and a showcase of other short films. Then, dance the night away in true Makila style with special guest DJs Royal Air TOGO and El Nosotros!
This event marked another step in a cycle of creation and multimedia exploration with the support of Agence TOPO and National Institute of Image and Sound [INIS]. Since December 2008, a dozen of professional workshops in film and multimedia have open space to the multiple ways of interactive video manipulations in order to define how could a Kalavera 2.0 could take advantage of public participation, where the actual linear viewing would become arborescent.
Presented as part of a special event of http://www.festivalissimo.ca, the Spanish and Latin-American film festival, the evening also included the presentation of Makila.tv, Makila’s new web site designed by Agence TOPO, and WhoWeAre.ca , a web site produced by Kung fu Numerik and Turbulent with the support of the National film board of Canada (NFB). Makila also presented 3 short clips as part of Cineskuela, short interviews with film directors Ursula Bieman (Switzerland), Thavisouk Phrasavath (Laos – US) and Geneviève Perron (Québec). Members of the collective Makila, Diego Briceño and Ellen Tang also presented 3 short films of their project Frente Unido, based on the liberation theology in Latin-america.
This evening was presented as part of the 13th edition of Festivalissimo – http://www.festivalissimo.ca –, March 19 to April 5, 2009.

1ere MANIFIESTA réussie à la SAT avec MAKILA
Plus de 100 personnes sont venues assister, le dimanche 23 novembre 2008, à la Société des arts électroniques (SAT), à la projection de la 4e Kalavera Deliciosa et de divers autres courts-métrages du collectif MAKILA coop, une soirée festive et manifeste avec djs et compagnie. Cette soirée marquait le lancement d’un cycle de formation et de création avec MAKILA, en collaboration avec l’Agence TOPO et l’Institut national de l’image et du son (INIS). Les ateliers se tiendront en parallèle à la création d’une nouvelle série de 13 courts films de 30 secondes qui vont constituer la 5e série de ce cadavre exquis vidéo qui sera projeté lors d’une seconde soirée MANIFIESTA à la SAT, le dimanche 15 mars 2009. VÉVÉ, interactive and generative poetry at Blue Metropolis
Agence TOPO presents VÉVÉ, a web art project by Sofian Audry,
at the 10th International Festival of Litterature Montreal Blue Metropolis,
from April 30 to May 4, 2008
The International Festival of Litterature Blue Metropolis was hosting the new web art work VÉVÉ by artist Sofian Audry. This project of generative and interactive poetry is resulting from Sofian Audry's artist residency at the artist-run centre Agence TOPO. Audio artist Alexandre Quessy also contributed to this project with his musical signature About VÉVÉ, a generative and interactive poetry project
All along the festival, VÉVÉ was accessible in a friendly and cosy space at Hotel Delta, allowing visitors and invited authors to play, create their own vévé and teach it words making sense one with the other. The official presentation of VÉVÉ by the artist gave place to a spontaneous poetic performance with Pascale Malaterre and Nancy Labonté.
Sofian Audry is a young Montreal artist. In 2003, he finishes a Master in natural language processing (University of Montreal). Since then, his practice has been focused on the concept of processing, through interactive web-based works and installations of his own or created within a collective, among them several with the collective Drone. His work has been presented in Canada, Norway, Netherlands and Slovenia and in many virtual spaces.
Opening space to digital litterature
Notably with the presentation of this work, the Blue Metropolis Festival offered to the public an occasion to discover a new dimension of litterature, one that lives through technology and interactive processes. Two round tables on this topic have taken place on Saturday May 3, 2008, one in French and the other one in English, with several specialists and artists. For Agence TOPO, this participation at Blue Metropolis marked an important point after one year of involvement in promoting digital writing through the organization of the Sortir de l'écran/Spoken Screen series of conferences and hypermedia performances, in collaboration with the NT2 Laboratory (new technologies, new textualities) at UQAM.

Conçu et dirigé par l'artiste Gennaro De Pasquale, ce projet a été créé avec le soutien de l'Agence TOPO qui a produit et réalisé en 2004 le site Internet Post-Audio NetLab, une plateforme interactive adaptée de l'installation initiale Post-Audio_Esthetic à la galerie Clark, en 2000. Pour cette présentation à Québec s'ajoutaient à ces réalisations et aux performances audiovisuelles en direct de 5mm et Parallaxe, la mise en espace de vidéos de De Pasquale : la projection d'un diptyque vidéo (Mars and Parallax), des vidéos sur moniteurs (Man from Mars, Strawberry Fields, DesertLoop, Post-Audio_DVD). Ce rendez-vous dans l'univers musical de Post-Audio venait donc souligner la démarche d'un artiste explorant sous différentes perspectives la relation entre le son et l'image, la culture musicale en constante mutation. She performed on Wednesday, March 26 at La Centrale and gave a lecture on Thursday, March 27, 2008 at UQAM. The presence on the Internet, "a performance in the public space of solitude" At Powerhouse on March 26, Annie Abrahams presented a performance entitled Le chœur souhaitant / The Wish Choir and a video projection of ViolenceS, at La Centrale on March 26, 2008. The artist invited visitors to read a series of wishes and desires that Abrahams has collected over the years through her website - http://bram.org/wishes. Her stay in Montreal also included, on March 25, a collective writing workshop during which participants were invited to write around a common theme directly into a Web interface. During the second part of the workshop, participants have discussed about how this text could be performed or otherwise transmitted. The Montreal sound artist Kathy Kennedy was part of this workshop. Annie Abrahams's stay in Montreal started with a performance, on March 20, at Oboro, for the launch of bleuOrange 00 - http://revuebleuorange.org, a literature webzine published by the Laboratoire NT2. |

As part of Sortir de l'écran / Spoken Screen, a series of performances and conferences on hypermedia works, Agence TOPO and NT2 presented Yannick B. Gélinas (Montréal), poet and artist known for its extensive use of all media art forms. She performed on Wednesday, February 13, at La Centrale and gave a conference on Thursday, February 14, 2008 at UQAM. As a poet and video/new media artist, Yannick B. Gélinas has directed several interactive works combining video portraits and poetry where she reveals herself, intimately, in a quest for happiness and the multiple manifestations of pleasure. The author is also an experienced blogger - www.yannou.com/blog - and she holds a weekly chronicle about new medias - www.dziit.com - for the program Premières vues (Canal Vox). At La Centrale, Yannick B. Gélinas will present VIDA, a video blog-performance where she will read excerpts from her blog and from her book, L'Emportement, with the participation of musician Janet Lumb and VJ Karine Charbonneau. In this performance, the artist will encorporate multiple disciplins from her media art practice. She will combine reading texts, live blogging, projecting footage from home-movies, children's games, and other expressions of life's pleasure taken from Plaisirs, le film. This short interactive film is a poetic fiction released on DVD with her book L'emportement published in 2006 by Planète Rebelle. L'emportement is her second book published with this editor, after Mordre, a poetry collection accompanied by a CD-ROM entitled Parenthèses in 2002. |

Le travail d’Aya Karpinska inclut des installations, de la musique générée par ordinateur, de la poésie électronique, du design graphique — des productions multipliant les interactions dans des espaces physiques et virtuels. Sa poésie tridimensionnelle a été exposée dans des festivals et des colloques internationaux. Récipiendaire du Brown Fellowship for Electronic Writing de la Brown University, elle enseigne la création littéraire hypermédiatique à New York. Dans Lala, la poupée d’enfance de l’artiste sert d’interface pour interagir avec le texte à l’écran. Dans Nobody Knows but You, conçu pour servir à une bataille de VJ dans une boîte de nuit, des manettes de jeu vidéo contrôlent les textes et les images. |

Mixed Greens is a do-it-yourself movie about identity, belonging and the things we desire. It consists of two stories: four generations of Irish Jewish heritage played against four decades of lesbian life. In public presentations, the artist simulates the interactive interface by asking the public to vote by using cards. Michelle Citron creates films and interactive videos that have been shown at museums and festivals and which are a part of many institutional collections. In her series of cd-roms Queer Feast, she explores lesbian contemporary culture. Author of Home Movies and Other Necessary Fictions (University of Minnesota Press, 1999), she is currently Chair of the Department for Interdisciplinary Art, Columbia College (Chicago). The web lends itself easily to the constructed identity and brings up many questions as to what is true or false in the information offered by the people who stage it: the web has become a relational tool with which individuals try to forge closer relations.
Curator Élène Tremblay has invited four artists who have developed fictitious identities in their practices to create works where these probable identities could spread. Net surfers will be invited to discover them, to witness fragments of their life and to form relationships with them, in a context where certain doubts could arise as to the existence of these characters.
The artists, Marie-Josée Hardy, Maryse Larivière, Marcio Lana-Lopez and James Prior, pose as characters being telephoned by the owner of a lost cell phone. Their names, telephone numbers and other personal information appear on the menu of the cell phone, which serves as an interface to contact each of them, at least with the accessible elements of their personae.

Michel Lefebvre, Eva Quintas et Childe Roland presented Astres/Stars/Goleuadau at the festival E-Poetry 2007 in Paris. The presentation/performance (see QuickTime video) took place on May 2007 at Point Éphémère. The festival was a great opportunity for Agence TOPO to highlight the work of Quebec artists within the international E-Poetry community
In 2007-2008, Agence TOPO will collaborate with NT2 lab (New Textualities / New Technologies) from the UQAM and host a series of 4 events of e-literature that will take place at the Powerhouse – La Centrale gallery (Montréal) with the artists Michelle Citron (USA), Aya Karpinska (USA), Yannick B. Gélinas (Québec/Canada) and Annie Abrahams (France/Holland).

Following an invitation from ArtEngine, Michel Lefebvre and Gennaro De Pasquale went to Ottawa to present Agence TOPO and Post-Audio_DVD. The video projection was followed by a music program.

« Verano » (« summer ») was started by Isabelle Bernier in 2005 during a residency in Mexico at the multimedia center of the Centro national de las artes. She ended the work with the support of Agence TOPO that host her in residency. The launch took place at the gallery Powerhouse / La Centrale in March 2007.

2e Rencontres Internationales d’art contemporain de Chizé
L’Agence TOPO a présenté une programmation canadienne en nouveaux médias dans le cadre des 2e Rencontres internationales d’art contemporain de Chizé, événement qui s’est tenu du 23 au 26 juillet 2004 dans le village de Chizé, situé en Deux-Sèvres, dans la région de Poitou-Charentes, France.
Pendant quatre jours, le village fut transformé en site de création accueillant une dizaine d’expositions, des concerts, de même qu’un symposium en plein air où 50 artistes venus des cinq continents faisant pour le grand public, un état des lieux de la création contemporaine.
Viva Chizé ! misa sur les notions de collaboration, de participation, d’interaction, de rencontre et de fête. La programmation fut organisée essentiellement autour d’un volet de création in situ et d’un volet d’exposition d’oeuvres vidéo, web et cédérom.
L’événement fut réalisé en partenariat avec le Comité d’animation des Fêtes de Chizé. Il bénéficia du soutien de l’Ambassade du Canada dans le cadre du programme de célébrations Canada-France 1604-2004 et de l’Office franco-québécois pour la jeunesse (OFQJ).
