Detours – Poetics of the City

Detours – Poetics of the City is a Web work for mobile platforms created by Taien Ng-Chan and produced by Agence TOPO as part of its 2011-2012 artist in residency program. The work consists of a cartography of various urban itineraries and a visual and literary interpretation of brief moments of exploration, encounters and places, and contact with urban elements which often escape visibility.
Thanks to support by the Réseau Accès culture of the Ville de Montréal, the Detours – Poetics of the City project was accompanied by a series of creative encounters between the initial creators of Detours and citizens from the five Ville de Montréal boroughs. Presented in the form of exploratory digital art workshops, these encounters provided participants with the opportunity to use photography, video and sound to catalogue, record and interpret their neighbourhood in a new light. These workshops led to the creation of Web clips and new interactive itineraries which expanded the initial work. These itineraries will be launched in the presence of the participants and the public during the opening which is scheduled for May 10, 2012 at 6 PM, at the Maison de la culture Ahuntsic-Cartierville located at 10 300 rue Lajeunesse, metro Henri-Bourassa.
In the Maisons de la culture, the Detours – Poetics of the City will be set up according to the requirements of each site and will be displayed on computer terminals, as a projection or on digital tablets. Presented as part of the first edition of the first International Digital Arts Biennial (BIAN), the Detours project will be shown from May 10 to June 13 in the participating Maisons de la culture. 1 May 2012 | COMMENTOn Saturday, March 24, Agence TOPO will present MOBILE FOCUS, a day of discussions that will also include presentations of art projects which make use of mobile or geolocational technologies for smartphones or graphic tablets. This free activity is open to all and will be held from 10 am to 5 pm at the Home of the web in Montréal, formerly known as the Notman House, located at 51, rue Sherbrooke West, in Montréal.

In the wake of its digital arts explorations and as part of its ongoing digital art research, creation and dissemination activities with interdisciplinary approaches and digital platforms, Agence TOPO invites you to discover the worlds of 3 innovative Montréal creators and collectives, Jean Dubois, Taien Ng-Chan and the Audiotopie collective, who, each in their own way, explore mobile technologies, geolocation and the poetics of everyday life.
The day will close with the public launch of the work Detours: Poetics of the City created during an exploratory research and production residency undertaken by the artist Taien Ng-Chan and her collaborators at the Agence TOPO in 2011-2012. Accompanied by a wine reception.
Agence TOPO is a Montréal-based artist-run centre dedicated to the production, dissemination and distribution of multimedia works that explore new narrative modes within an interdisciplinary and intercultural approach.
Agence TOPO is proud to be associated with the Notman house for the presentation of this day that brings art and mobile technologies together. The House of the Web, which opened in 2010, supports the start up of young companies and hosts many network events which contribute to the creative dynamism of Montréal in the information technology sector.

Poursuivant ses activités de recherche et de création sur les croisements interdisciplinaires et les plateformes mobiles, l’Agence TOPO s’associe au laboratoire de médias expérimentaux OBX (http://www.obxlabs.net ) pour développer une nouvelle série de présentations autour de la poésie numérique. Ce centre de recherche de l’Université Concordia développe des outils logiciels pour permettre aux auteurs du numérique de créer de la littérature visuelle. Il se caractérise notamment par un travail spécifique autour de la lettre, du caractère, de la typographie.
L’Agence TOPO et le lab OBX offrent un premier atelier gratuit de démonstration d’oeuvres et d’apprentissage d’outils d’animation typographique à l’intention d’artistes et de poètes intéressés par l’écriture numérique.

21 February 2012 | COMMENTBeau succès pour la 4e édition Sortir de l’écran/Spoken Screen
Le 25 novembre, à la salle Normand-McLaren de la Cinémathèque québécoise, le public était au rendez-vous pour accueillir les artistes Jhave, Érick D’Orion et Simon Dumas et la présentation d’oeuvres de Y0UNG-HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES qui ont signé la 4ème édition de la série de performances médiatiques Sortir de l’écran/Spoken Screen.
Les oeuvres rythmées de Y0UNG-HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES ont commencé la soirée avec les créations Dakota, Cunnilingus in North Korea, Samsung means to come et Bust down the doors. Par la suite, le poète numérique Jhave, accompagné de AvdK, nous a offert une prestation de Glia Glial pleine de clins d’oeil au monde des nouvelles technologies.
En deuxième partie, l’artiste audio Érick D’Orion nous a fait découvrir Beauté Baroque, un projet mettant l’accent sur les possibilités de la quadriphonie et de l’espace sonore et qui explore le thème de la passion pour une femme inaccessible qui hante le roman éponyme de Claude Gauvreau. Finalement, Fade Out de Simon Dumas est venu clore la soirée en beauté et avec une oeuvre invoquant la rémanence, cette persistance partielle d’un phénomène après sa disparition.

The Board of Directors of Agence TOPO, artist-run center in New Media, is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Marc Fournel as the new General Coordinator of the organization. Holding a Master’s degree in communications from the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), Mr. Fournel pursues creative research work in interactive media, while having developed a rich background as a cultural manager in Canadian artist-run centres. |

Mr. Fournel has been director of Vidéographe Production, Artistic Director of DAÏMÕN, and was one of the organizers and artistic curators of the 2nd International Congress of Pure Data held in Montréal in 2007. Co-founder of the cultural organization DAGAFO, he is also a Sessional teacher at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) and the Université du Québec à Chicoutimi (UQAC).
Agence Topo will release its program of activities for the fall during the Annual General Meeting of Members on Friday September 23, 2011, with the presentation of a new production project for mobile platforms with artist in residence Taien Ng-Chan.

Les 20, 21 et 22 mai 2011, l’Agence TOPO participait à la troisième édition des Ateliers Portes Ouvertes (A.P.O.), une initiative du Centre Clark en partenariat avec Ubisoft. Dans le cadre de cet événement l’Agence TOPO présentait dans ses espaces de la rue de Gaspé et en présence des artistes, la documentation du projet Récit-collage – la matière ordinaire, une performance de l’artiste Manon de Pauw, le projet de géolocalisation en cours de production Poetics of the City, de l’artiste en résidence Taien Ng-Chang, dont le film 80 du Parc faisait aussi l’objet d’une projection commentée, et, finalement, le projet Béta-cité produit et réalisé en collaboration avec le collectif Audiotopie.
Soirée réussie à la Cinémathèque québécoise : Sortir de l’écran/Spoken Screen
Le 4 mars 2011, à la salle Normand-McLaren de la Cinémathèque québécoise, c’est dans une salle bondée que l’artiste Manon De Pauw et le collectif Audiotopie ont signé une nouvelle édition de la série de performances médiatiques Sortir de l’écran/Spoken Screen.
Manon de Pauw a ouvert la soirée avec la collaboration du danseur Pierre-Paul Ouellette. Son Récit-collage, La matière ordinaire – terme scientifique qui définit les structures visibles et lumineuses de l’univers – a fait voyager le public entre l’atelier et le cosmos. Le dispositif scénique, un simple écran de mylar, devenait tour à tour espace de projection, de réflexion, d’introspection et de jeu. Les artistes manipulaient en direct des objets sous le regard des spectateurs et leurs actions s’accompagnaient de textes, d’images fixes et en mouvement, d’extraits web et de divers dispositifs d’éclairage.
Avec une proposition esthétique tout à fait différente, le collectif Audiotopie a improvisé une trame musicale à partir du site web Bêta-cité, un projet de cartographie audiovisuelle interactive produit durant une résidence de création à l’Agence TOPO. En utilisant notamment les outils de création sonore incorporés au site web, les musiciens Etienne Legast et David Martin ainsi que le vidéaste Éric Anglade ont su donner une couleur sonore et visuelle inédite aux parcours guidés des quartiers de Montréal explorés dans Bêta-cité.

Bêta-cité – Urban Exploration and Musical Improvisation http://www.beta-cite.com Compose your city! Bêta-cité is an audiovisual & interactive mapping project on the Web created by the Audiotopie cooperative in collaboration with Agence TOPO, an artist-run centre dedicated to new media. The website makes it possible to create audio guided urban walking tours which the user can design and try out in the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce and Saint-Laurent boroughs in Montreal. Bêta-cité provides a space for interpretation, discovery, experimentation and composition on the internet based on a walking itinerary in these two city neighbourhoods. The project brings together Audiotopie’s four members: Yannick Guégen and Edith Normandeau for the script, Étienne Legast and David Martin for the music; as well as Sylvain Lamy and Marie-Hélène Gosselin for the narration and David Tousignant for the video. During the evening, Audiotopie will orchestrate a musical goup improvisation, using the Bêta-cité website devices. More information >>> |
