Ancrée dans l’histoire de l’humanité et toujours criante d’actualité, la thématique regroupe plusieurs questionnements portés par le centre, tant politiques et sociaux que technologiques et physiques.
La notion de frontière est riche de connotations historiques, géographiques, psychologiques et artistiques. Dans sa dimension contemporaine, elle est de plus en plus envisagée comme point de contact et de négociation, et non plus seulement comme barrière. À l’instar du philosophe Régis Debray, nous souhaitons « penser la frontière non comme un mur (à abattre pour s’étendre, à dresser pour se défendre), mais comme une peau, capable de respirer, donc d’organiser des échanges avec le milieu. » (Éloge des frontières, Gallimard 2013).
Un cycle d’expositions
La programmation est organisée autour de trois cycles thématiques composés d’expositions dans la Vitrine du rez-de-chaussée du Pôle de Gaspé (une première frontière vitrée), d’ateliers, de performances, et de présentations d’artistes.
Cultures, langages, spiritualités : au-delà des frontières
Le premier cycle réunit quatre artistes issus de la pluralité des Amériques qui explorent la reconquête des racines et des héritages, à travers des questionnements sur la mémoire et la mort.

Le deuxième cycle de Frontière présente trois installations qui interrogent les technologies et leur impact sur nos vies et nos sociétés, dans leur capacité, notamment, de brouiller les frontières entre le vrai et le faux, le documentaire et la fiction, le vivant et le non-vivant.

Géopolitique : espaces variables
La notion de géopolitique viendra nourrir le troisième cycle avec une réflexion autour des relations entre la géographie (humaine, matérielle, territoriale) et le sociopolitique, interrogeant de diverses façons les rapports de pouvoir dans l’espace.

Une réflexion théorique
Afin de réfléchir plus profondément à la thématique, TOPO a invité sept auteurs et autrices en vue d’une publication rétrospective et réflexive prévue pour 2022.
Trois autrices ont spécifiquement abordé les trois cycles de la programmation d’installations et de projets d’art web soutenus à la réalisation par TOPO entre septembre 2019 et septembre 2021.

Anchored in the history of humanity and always on the cutting edge of current events, this theme combines many of the questions considered by TOPO – as much political and social as physical and technological.
The notion of border is rich in historical, political, psychological, and artistic connotations. In its contemporary dimension, it is increasingly seen as a point of contact and of negotiation rather than simply as a barrier. Like the philosopher Regis Debray, we wish to “think the border not as a wall (demolished for expansion, erected for protection), but as a skin, capable of breathing and thus of organizing exchanges within environments” (Éloge des frontières, Gallimard 2013).
A Program of Exhibitions
The program is organized around three thematic cycles composed of exhibitions in the TOPO showcase on the ground floor of a creative hub – the Pôle de Gaspé (a first glass frontier) – workshops, performances, and artist presentations.
Cultures, Languages, and Spiritualities: Beyond Borders
The first cycle brings together four artists from the plurality of the Americas who explore the reconquest of roots and heritages, through questions about memory and death.

A Theoretical Reflection
